Our 6-month-old son received his first dose of Hiberix yesterday and since then he has been extremely fussy, having trouble sleeping and has developed redness and swelling at the injection site. I am really worried. I know that some side effects are common but this does not seem right. We do not have a pediatrician, who do you recommend? The clinic that gave him the shot just said it was normal and to give him Tylenol. Should we trust them or should we go to an ER or urgent care? He also has a high fever. What should we do? Please help!.

I feel like the clinic should have given you more information than just giving him Tylenol. Vaccines are serious business! Keep us updated.

I'm sorry to hear that. High fever and extreme fussiness are not normal side effects and should be evaluated by a medical professional immediately. We took our little one to urgent care after their Hib vaccine and they were able to check him for other potential issues and give us some peace of mind. I would not wait, go to the ER or urgent care.

I had a similar experience with my daughter. She had a bad reaction to the Hib vaccine. It turns out she was sensitive to a specific ingredient. We had to get special testing done. Don't hesitate to advocate for your child. If something doesn't feel right, it's okay to push for answers. ER is the best option.

High fever is not normal. Go to the ER. Seriously, whatever else you do, don't wait. Do you know what to do if your child has a seizure? Look up febrile seizures. Better to be prepared. Also, check with the doctor that they didn't claim in writing that they told you it was normal. If they did, you have a potential lawsuit if your son has more serious issues.

I don't understand why they didn't call the pediatrician. I would find a new clinic as doctors should not dismiss parents like that.
