Thioridazine, an older antipsychotic medication, was once commonly used to treat conditions like schizophrenia. However, due to its serious side effects, particularly those affecting the heart, it's now rarely prescribed and only used as a last resort. The medication works by altering certain brain chemicals, but its risks can be severe. If you or someone you know is taking Thioridazine, it's crucial to be aware of the potential side effects and when to seek medical help. This thread is for sharing experiences, asking questions, and discussing the pros and cons of this medication.

It's frightening to think about the potential heart issues. My doctor warned me about that but I didn't experience any major problems. Maybe I was lucky. However, I think considering all the risks, newer antipsychotics should be the first choice

Seriously, who even prescribes this stuff anymore? Haven't we moved on to safer options?

What’s the alternative for someone who absolutely needs an antipsychotic and can’t tolerate the side-effects of others?

I've been on Thioridazine for a while and haven't had any major issues. Just some drowsiness and a dry mouth, which aren't too bad. I'm glad I didn't have any severe reactions though.

I had a friend who took this and developed neuroleptic malignant syndrome. It was terrifying. He had a high fever, muscle stiffness, and confusion. He had to be hospitalized right away. If you experience any of those symptoms, don't wait—go to the ER.

I work in a psychiatric ward, and I've seen firsthand the devastating effects of tardive dyskinesia. It's a rare condition, but when it happens, it can be life-altering. Patients who develop it often have to deal with involuntary movements for the rest of their lives. If you're taking Thioridazine, be aware of the symptoms and talk to your doctor immediately if you notice anything unusual.

There are definitely better options out there. But for some people, Thioridazine might be the only thing that works. It's all about finding the right balance between effectiveness and side effects. Doctors should only prescribe it when all other options have been exhausted.

I’ve heard that the neurological side effects can be really hard to deal with. Does anyone here have experience with movement disorders from Thioridazine?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this drug is dangerous. My doctor mentioned it, but I refused to take it. I've heard too many horror stories. I'd rather try something else first.
