I've been prescribed Vancomycin 1gm/200m Inj 12x200ml for a serious bacterial infection. I'm really worried about the potential side effects, especially the severe ones. Has anyone else had experience with this medication? How did you manage the side effects? I'd really appreciate some insights and advice. Also, I'm a bit confused. Is this give through IV full dose while the infection is active or is it split? I don't want to getrenal failure or any of those serious reactions.

I had an allergic reaction to Vancomycin and ended up in the ER. It was scary, but I'm glad I sought help right away. The nurse was scared of the infusion and switched it to a piggyback bag.

I had Vancomycin and I felt like I was dying. But I was lucky not to have any serious reactions. They were giving it to me in a ward for 7 days. My veins were a mess from the medicine. I wound up with a PICC line. I felt my urine was more concentrated and my kidneys were in trouble. My doctor was amazing and switched me to another med.

I'm curious about how they administer it. Is it usually given all at once or is it spread out over time? I'm trying to figure out what to expect from the treatment schedule. Also it sounds like they give it through the vein correctly it is often given as a piggyback. Sometimes it’s through a port. It’s scary to think about what would happen if it leaked from the vein. Hopefully you can get it as an outpatient.

If you get a fever or chills during infusion, let your nurse know. Those are common symptoms. The doctor had to stop the infusion and give me Benadryl. The itching was the worst. It was too fast, too much.

It is a nasty drug. It bugs me when they tell me that my infection is resistant. Why did my doc have to use it. I felt horrible and the side effects were real. I wish there was a better way.

I took Vancomycin for a MRSA infection a few years back. The side effects for me were minimal, just some stomach upset and diarrhea. But I know people who had more serious reactions. Make sure to monitor your symptoms closely and talk to your doctor about any concerns. Be sure your nurse knows how to push it. It MUST be IV

I work in healthcare and I've seen patients react badly to Vancomycin. The 'red man syndrome' can be quite alarming, but it's usually not serious. Inform nurse immediately if it happens. You should be monitored closely during infusion. If your doctor gives you a prescription of this med just be aware and ask about the dose and the schedule. It could be slow and steady or a bolus. Be aware if you get it and have to go to the bathroom. it can affect the kidneys. Also, if you have a history of kidney issues, make sure your doctor is aware. It's crucial to stay hydrated and monitor your urine output.
