Vitamin D deficiency in India: How concerned should Indians be?
Vitamin D deficiency is a global issue, but it's particularly prevalent in India. With our tropical climate, it might seem like we should have enough sun exposure to maintain healthy vitamin D levels, but factors like pollution, indoor lifestyles, and cultural practices (like covering up for religious or traditional reasons) contribute to this deficiency. I've been trying to educate myself on this issue: How concerned should Indians be about vitamin D deficiency? What are some effective ways to ensure we're getting enough? Are there any cultural practices or foods that can help?

True, pollution is a major factor. It blocks the sun's rays and makes it harder for our bodies to produce vitamin D. But we can't just stop using cars or generators, so what do we do? Also, I don't believe in supplements, they're not safe.
My mom makes me drink a glass of fortified milk every day. It's a bit annoying, but it's better than being deficient, right? Sunscreen also blocks the sun's rays. I feel like we need more education about this.
as a dermatologist, I would recommend a good source of Vitamin D3 and K2. It's important to take a multivitamin daily or a Vitamin D3 supplement. 15-20 minutes of sunlight exposure on arms and legs will help. It's important to consider your skin type, location, clothing and age
This is a serious issue. My doctor suggested I take vitamin D supplements, but I'm not sure how much I need. Can anyone share their experiences or recommendations?
Vitamin D deficiency is a serious issue in India. I've read that up to 90% of Indians are deficient, which is alarming. We should be encouraging more outdoor activities and sun exposure, along with fortified foods and supplements if necessary.
I know some people think that if you're dark skinned you don't need to worry about vitamin D, but that's not true. We should all be concerned and taking steps to ensure we're getting enough, whether we're fair or dark.
We need to be talking about this more. I feel like people think it's not a big deal, but it can lead to serious health problems. We need to educate ourselves and others about the importance of vitamin D.
We should be talking about food sources of vitamin D too. Fatty fish, eggs and mushrooms (when exposed to sunlight) are great sources. But I'm not sure how much we need to eat to meet our daily requirements, and I'm not sure which mushrooms help the most.
I've been taking cod liver oil since my doctor recommended it for my Vitamin D deficiency. It's horrible to take, but it works. I've seen a drastic improvement in my health since taking it daily.
